"TWO BIRDS, UNITED always and know by the same name, closely cling to the same tree. One of them eats the sweet fruit; while the other looks on without eating.
Seated on the same tree, the jiva moans, bewildered by his impotence. But when he beholds the other, The Lord worshipped by all, and His glory, he then becomes free from grief.
When the seer, beholds the self-luminous Creator, the Lord, The Purusha, the progenitor of Brahma, then he, the wise seer, shakes off good and evil, becomes stainless, and reaches the supreme unity.
He indeed is Prana; he shines forth variously in all beings. The wise man who knows him does not babble. Revelling in the Self, delighting in the Self, performing actions, he is foremost among the knowers of Brahman.
This Atman, resplendent and pure, whom the sinless sannyasins behold residing with the body, is attatined by unceasing practice of Truthfullness, austerity (sincerity), right knowledge, and continence.
That Brahman, shines forth vast, self-luminous, inconceivable, subtler than the subtle. He is far beyond what is far, and yet here very very near at hand. Verily, He is seen here, dwelling in the cave of the heart of conscious beings.
Brahman is not grasped by the eye, nor by the speech, nor by the other senses, nor by penance or good works. A man becomes pure through serenity of intellect; thereupon, in meditation, he beholds HIM who is without parts..."

I like and use that story to show how the soul is witnessing are actions on the physical plane. The lower layers of our mind eat the berries, seeds and worms and get the joy of eating and the stomach aches, but the highr self only watches unattached. The bird on the higher branch represents are higher self.
I use to think I was a body with a soul, but now I am realizing that I am a soul with a body.

Yes, this ancient scripture is address the microcosm and the macrcosm; us in our lower and higher aspects. But to me, it also has another meaning; and something I find hard to express but will give it a whirl. In our lives so many of us are seeking after a perfect love, a love like no other. Most often, whether we are young or old we try to find it in the eyes of another. Many are seeking their 'soul mate' I think, and all too often are disappointed when they do not find it. Well, to me, this scripture speaks to that; because it is telling us that there is always a greater part of ourself that does not incarnate but stays in its more heavenly state, but still united to us through the Silver Cord that binds. When we incarnate into a male body our higher self will take on a more feminine nature; and while in a female body our soul mate will take on a more masculine persona'. In this I truly believe. I also believe that we go through a series of incarnations until we literally meet self; although this would be upon very rare occassions indeed, and more than likely for a very high purpose. On that day, there is a wedding in heaven. And on that day, another rainbow is formed.

In a group meditation, it is said it takes about 20 minutes for a group consciousness to form depending on the aspirants. Satsang or spiritual discussion is similar. Others have spoken to me out of theis group consciousness which was something I needed to hear. When I have spoken in similar situations I thought I was speaking to others, but was actually speaking to myself from the expanded consciousness formed. We sit and look up at the sky only to find ourselves looking back like a reflection in a pool of consciousness.

Sounds interesting. Are you speaking here about having an astral or mental projection? With regard to time: I have noticed that it takes approximately 20 minutes to run through a complete body relaxation. For the average person, it takes about the same amount of time to fall off to sleep. When we do, in my opinion we begin to expand our etheric or astral body vehicle---and yes, through the breath. So that doing this in a group would just magnify the experience and at times intensify it depending upon those present. In a sleep state subconscious minds can be linked. Likewise in a meditative state our superconscious minds can be linked also, again, depending upon who is present and also what they are thinking about. More to the point, who is leading. And this is where attending a group can cause troubles; because in an altered state we are opening ourselves up to the emotional vibrations and thoughts of those around us. In other words it may become easier to be given a hypnotic suggestion and one with negative connotations. Your experience sounds like it was a positive one, however.

I think the experience was more like what Jung called the collective unconscious. We used our individual consciousness together to bidge the gap and get a taste of the collective unconscious by first experiencing the group consciousness formed and then linking to everything in the collective unconsciousness.
