When the body dies, I think most everyone hopes/believes that there is a continuation of being, spirit, self, use whatever vocabulary you will for that.
In some cultures time is considered cyclical, so that my life right now might be considered "life after death" in the sense that I have surely "died" before and I have "life" right now. Within the thought patterns of these cultures we might describe our non-physical state of beingness as "life during death" instead of "life after death."
In Western (Judeo/Christian/Islam) culture we tend to be exposed to a more linear concept of time, thus life after death means something completely different. We keep on living as a spirit and/or we are eventually resurrected.
Now I wonder, what is the point of death if, at some point, there is not a complete and total death--no consciousness, no beingness--cold complete utter destructive gone gone gone death.
A couple of years ago I was messing around holding my breath and I stood up abruptly, took a handful of steps, and passed out from lack of oxygen--not like drifting asleep this was sudden utter blackness. A second or an eternity might have passed for all I could sense of time; then I remember hearing a voice (it was my wife bending over me calling my name). I was totally blind and disoriented (where who what when am I?) until enough new oxygen got to my brain that I could compute.
Having thus "died" and been "born again" I concluded that whether there is life after the period of death or not, death ain't all that bad.
It's getting dead that sucks...

Hi Jeff,
I don't really think getting "dead" sucks LOL...many people who had out of body experience will tell you how great the other world and energy is to those who get to have a glimpse of it. Even, when souls come forward to me ..i always feel amazing peace and a feeling of unconditional love from them. So, I have a hard time believing that crossing over is really that bad..infect, it is the greatest transition we can even make it in our journey.
L&L,
Nat
P.S. Also, do not play "death" games with yourself...you really not getting what you are looking for

Would it be when the soul exits, you think, Jeff?

Hi Nat. I mean the *process* of getting dead, ie pain suffering disease etc.
And what do you mean by "play death games"...?

I don't think so PN. I am talking about the death of the soul, the death of the spirit, the death of the immortal self. Surely even the eternal self gets a rest...?
(I'm pondering out loud, not saying how it is...)
