PHASE FOURTEEN

THE LIVING APPARITION

Section I--Spiritual Advice
(Monday morning, the twenty-seventh day of March)

_A_ND when I had dismissed Eleazar and my disciples, I took this brief opportunity to visit my father's tomb, and seeking wisdom and understanding, I went up to the nearby grave site, to pray that my anger for causing my mother's tears might be forgiven me.

02 And through the spirit of my heavenly father, the word of the Lord came to me, saying: Son, if you seek to know Wisdom and understanding and the true meaning of baptism by water, get ye to the land of king Hiran which is now called Sidon, and there you shall meet a holy woman called Elisabeth. Follow this daughter of God, and she will introduce you to a mystic called Thomas, [who is Talmai], a descendant of the king of Geshur. For he will show you a book in which the secrets of Wisdom are hid.

03 But go ye alone, whilst you send your disciples out baptizing with water, two by two. And from this day forward, fear ye not the baptismal water's of John, but rather be like a wise serpent that liveth in the sea, so that by so doing you may take away the reproach of John and cast away your own fear of death for ever. 'For if you wish to wipe away your own tears and the tears of thy mother, stretch forth thy hands in the midst of the waters like a fish that swimmeth, and dive headlong into the sea'.*

Section II--The Apparition
(Monday even, the twenty-seventh day of March)

04 And when the hour was growing late, and their newly procured ferry boat was in the midst of the headwaters of the sea, and I myself alone upon the land; for the ferry man of the coffer's boat, [which is, a flattened raft with a chest, and used as a temporary coffin while the body was in transit], would not wait for me; and they dreaded the thought of spending the night in the land of the dead.

05 And as I faced west, from the southeastern shoreline, I saw them labouring in their attempt to get to the other side, for the strong inlet current was against them. And it was about the fourth hour of the day, and I cometh up to them as it were, lying face down upon the water. And without the help of the pulling rope [which is the tow line] to guide me, I would have passed them by.

06 And they seeing me moving upon the water, thought I was an apparition, and they cried out to me, but they were not aware that I knew the secret art of walking upon the water [that is to say, in the English, he also knew how to swim underwater].

07 For they all saw me dive headlong into the sea, and were troubled, because they wrongly thought that I was committing suicide. That is to say, some of them thought that I would be devoured by the mythical dragon in the sea. For never having seen this feat before, they thought I was descending down into the water's of sheol where no man doth return.

08 And in a most joyful spirit, as I approached nearer to the ferry boat, immediately I spoke with them, and saith unto them: Have a good heart, it is I, fear ye not.

09 And I went up to them into the ferry boat, and as we passed over the narrow inlet the currents did cease. And they were far more astonished within themselves: For they, like most desert people, understood not concerning these natural mysteries; for their minds were still blinded to the truth and to the winds of time.

10 And when we had crossed completely over to the other side of the sea of Hula into the land of Canaan, and set foot to the shore of Thelia; having gone out of the ferry boat, when they spoke to me, immediately they said aloud: David whom we thought to be slain by the dragon in the sea, has been raised from the dead.

11 And believing this to have been a miracle, running through the whole countryside, they began to carry about in beds those that were sick. And whitersoever I entered, into towns or into villages about the sea of Hula, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought me that they might touch but the hem of my garment: And as many as touched me were made whole.

12 Which Herod hearing that I had descended into hell and then arose from the dead, said: John whom I beheaded is risen again from the dead.

13 But others believing in miracles said: It is 'Elias the Returner'.

14 And others not believing in miracles said: It is a learned and wise prophet, as one of the prophets, for surely this man has slain the dragon in the sea.
