PHASE TWENTY

THE CHALLENGE

Section I--The Champion of Amar

(Friday even, the ninth day of Nissan)

_A_ND by mid-Friday, the ninth day of April, as I was passing nearer to Jerusalem, at the meeting of her two ways, I sendeth, the twins, onto the road leading to Beth`an, [which is the House of An, or the Kingdom of Heaven as John the Dove called it].

02 And prior to eventide, as I was drawing nearer to the mount of Oliveri,* I whispered unto them: I beseech thee: Make haste, and go into Anna's house, that is over against the Kingdom of Heaven, and immediately at your coming in thither, you shall find a colt tied, and before the main gate, a sign that reads: "Here awaits the colt, upon which no man yet hath sat." Loosen him immediately, and bring him to me before the dawn of the new day [which is sunset].

03 And if the gate keeper shall say to you: What are you doing? say ye that David who is Solomon hath need of him: And immediately Simon the Essene will let him come hither. For Simon is the incarnation of Isaias the rescuer; and Anna his wife is called the Prophetess, because she is the immar, [which is, the lamb of God] who gave birth to Maher the hastener,* and in this lifetime to the premature birth of Immanuel.

04 And standing still, I commanded them to go their way. And they found the colt tied before the gate that leadeth into the House of An, a peaceful community and a citadel of a select group of men, women and children. And they loosed him. And Simon the serene [who is also Simon Jonah or Simon the dove], said to them: Do you know what you are doing? For this colt is reserved for him who would accept my challenge.

05 Who said to Amar the challenger, just as I commanded of them. And knowing that I was John's champion, he let him go with them. But delaying my entrance into the city, they did not return as I had requested.

Section II--The Sign Seekers

(The Sabbath night, the tenth day of Nissan)

06 And after the sun had gone down, (that is to say, on the night of the Sabbath, the tenth day of April), as I was awaiting their return, some of the pharisees hearing that I had requested the colt, came forth, and began to question with me, asking me for a sign from heaven, saying: Moses said, get ye a lamb,* but you have requested a colt in its stead?

07 And sighing deeply in spirit, for I knew in my heart that this would be my last Phase, I saith unto them: Why doth this generation seek a sign from heaven? Assuredly, I say unto you, a sign shall not be given this generation, save the sign of the times.

Section III--The Parable of Bread

08 And having accepted the challenge, when we were alone, I charged my disciples, and saith unto them in a new kind of parable: Take heed and beware of the 'sow', [which is here being interpreted to mean: beware of the leavenites who are the rising pharisees], among the Herodians.

09 And unknowingly, they reasoned among themselves, saying: Because we shall go up to Jerusalem without a lamb? or because we have no unleavened bread to celebrate the Passage of the Lord? For the eight were still unaware of my second baptism', nor were they aware of my prophesy.

Section IV--The Last Phase

10 But knowing how the Pharisees as well as the Sadducees hated the Essenes because they adhere to the laws of Moses the wise serpent, I saith unto the eight remaining Levites: Why do you question among yourselves, because we have no lamb? Do you not remember how the Herodians sacrificed the 'Only Begotten Son'.* For I shall no longer partake of the Passover lamb, until the Lamb of God be restored.*

11 Do you not yet understand that this is the reason why the priests and pharisees have sought to destroy me? Have you still your hearts blinded to their Herodian vices? Having eyes, do you not see the gathering multitudes; and having ears, do you not hear how the merciful cry out to me.
