Beta-Glucan and Oat Extract for Skin: What They Actually Do

Oats have been used for uncomfortable, dry, and irritated skin for a very long time. Modern cosmetic science has given us a better understanding of why.

But there is a terminology problem.

Beta-glucan, oat extract, oat kernel extract, and colloidal oatmeal are related, but they aren't interchangeable ingredients.

Oats naturally contain beta-glucans along with starches, lipids, proteins, phenolic compounds including avenanthramides, and other components. A cosmetic chemist can use the broader oat material, isolate or concentrate particular components, or use beta-glucan derived from an entirely different source.

That creates more formulation possibilities than simply putting “oat” on the front of a moisturizer.

What Is Beta-Glucan?

Beta-glucans are polysaccharides made from glucose units linked through beta-glycosidic bonds.

The important part is that beta-glucan describes a family of molecules, not one single cosmetic ingredient.

Beta-glucans occur naturally in:

  • Oats

  • Barley and other cereals

  • Yeast

  • Fungi and mushrooms

  • Some bacteria

  • Seaweeds

Their molecular structures differ depending on their source. Cereal beta-glucans such as oat beta-glucan are structurally different from many yeast and fungal beta-glucans, which means research on one beta-glucan shouldn't automatically be attributed to every other beta-glucan.

In cosmetics, the INCI name you may see is:

Depending on the commercial raw material, the beta-glucan may be supplied as a powder or within a liquid system containing water, humectants, preservatives, or other supporting ingredients.

This is one of those cases where the INCI list doesn't necessarily tell you the complete raw-material story.

What Does Beta-Glucan Do for Skin?

Topical beta-glucan has been investigated for several properties relevant to skincare, including moisturization, antioxidant activity, visible skin aging, skin permeation, and support of skin recovery.

For everyday cosmetic formulation, I find its value particularly interesting in products designed around hydration, comfort, barrier support, and sensitive or stressed-feeling skin.

Hydration

Beta-glucan is a polysaccharide, and its ability to interact with water makes it useful in hydrating formulations.

That puts it in some of the same product conversations as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol, and other humectant or water-management technologies.

It doesn't mean they are interchangeable.

Different polymers influence water binding, film formation, viscosity, sensory profile, and skin feel differently.

Skin Comfort

Beta-glucan also has a long history of research around biological responses relevant to irritated and stressed skin. Reviews of topical beta-glucan research include antioxidant and skin-recovery applications in addition to moisturization.

For a cosmetic product, I would translate that carefully.

“Helps soothe and comfort dry, stressed-feeling skin” is very different from claiming the ingredient treats an inflammatory skin disease.

That distinction becomes particularly important with oat-derived products because colloidal oatmeal has a specific OTC regulatory history in the United States.

We'll get to that shortly.

Beta-Glucan Is Not the Same Thing as Oat Extract

This is probably the most useful distinction in the entire article.

Beta-glucan is a particular class of polysaccharide.

Oat extract is a broader botanical material.

An oat-derived cosmetic ingredient can contain a complex mixture of naturally occurring oat components rather than a purified beta-glucan alone.

That means a formula containing Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract isn't necessarily equivalent to a formula containing Beta-Glucan.

And neither is automatically equivalent to colloidal oatmeal.

For consumers, all three may sound like “oat skincare.”

For a formulator, they're different tools.

The Oat INCI Names Matter

Oat is a good example of why reading an ingredient list requires more precision than looking for the word “oat.”

Several oat-derived materials can appear in cosmetics.

This is a botanical extract derived from the oat kernel.

The exact composition depends on the extraction and processing method. Commercial extracts can therefore differ in carrier, concentration, standardization, and composition even when their consumer-facing ingredient story sounds similar.

Finely processed oat kernel material can provide a different composition and function from a selective botanical extract.

Oat oil is the lipid fraction.

That makes it fundamentally different from water-soluble oat beta-glucan.

Oat kernel oil is being separately evaluated within the Cosmetic Ingredient Review process as a plant-derived edible oil ingredient.

From a formulation perspective, that creates a useful opportunity.

An oat-focused product doesn't necessarily have to rely on one “oat extract.” A chemist can potentially build different parts of the formula using different fractions of the plant.

Hydrolyzed Oat Materials

Hydrolyzed oat ingredients are another category. Processing changes the material, often producing smaller components with different solubility and functional characteristics.

This is particularly relevant in haircare and conditioning applications as well as some skincare systems.

This tells us the formula contains beta-glucan, but it doesn't necessarily tell us whether that beta-glucan came from oats.

Source matters when the product story specifically depends on oat.

Colloidal Oatmeal Is Different Again

Colloidal oatmeal isn't simply another marketing name for oat extract.

It is finely ground oatmeal intended to disperse in a suitable medium and has an established dermatologic history.

The whole-oat composition matters.

Colloidal oatmeal contains multiple components that can contribute to skin effects, including starches, beta-glucans, lipids, proteins, and phenolic compounds such as avenanthramides. Reviews of moisturizers used for atopic dermatitis describe beta-glucans and starches as contributing to moisturization and protective effects, while avenanthramides and other antioxidant components contribute additional biological activity.

That's why reducing the entire oat story to beta-glucan misses something important.

The whole oat can provide a multi-component ingredient system.

Beta-glucan gives the formulator a more targeted polysaccharide technology.

Those are different formulation strategies.

Colloidal Oatmeal Has a Regulatory Distinction in the United States

This is where oat becomes unusually interesting compared with many trendy “soothing” ingredients.

In the United States, colloidal oatmeal is included in the FDA OTC Skin Protectant Drug Products monograph.

That means qualifying products formulated and labeled according to the applicable OTC requirements can use colloidal oatmeal as a skin-protectant active for specific indications. The monograph includes concentration and labeling requirements that depend on product format and intended use.

This does not mean that every moisturizer containing oat extract or beta-glucan can claim to treat eczema.

Those are very different regulatory situations.

A cosmetic containing:

is not automatically an OTC skin-protectant drug.

A cosmetic containing:

Beta-Glucan

is not automatically an OTC skin-protectant drug.

And a product containing colloidal oatmeal doesn't automatically gain drug claims simply because the ingredient appears in the formula. The complete product has to meet the applicable requirements.

This distinction matters enormously when a founder says:

“I want to develop an eczema product.”

Before selecting the ingredient, we need to know whether the brand actually intends to develop a cosmetic for dry, sensitive skin or an OTC drug product carrying permitted eczema-related claims.

That decision changes the development path.

Oat Extract vs. Colloidal Oatmeal vs. Beta-Glucan

If you're choosing between them, I wouldn't ask which one is “best.”

I'd ask what the product needs.

Choose Beta-Glucan When...

The formulation needs a more targeted polysaccharide technology with hydration, skin-comfort, or barrier-support positioning.

Beta-glucan can also make sense when the brand wants a modern active story that isn't necessarily tied specifically to oats.

Choose Oat Extract When...

The product benefits from a broader botanical story and the specific commercial extract provides the composition, documentation, and performance the formulation requires.

The exact extract matters.

“Oat extract” is not a sufficiently detailed raw-material specification.

Choose Colloidal Oatmeal When...

Whole-oat composition and its established skin-protectant history are central to the product concept.

If OTC claims are intended in the United States, the applicable regulatory pathway needs to be built into product development from the beginning.

Or Use More Than One

This is where formulation gets more interesting.

There can be a rational reason to combine oat technologies.

A product might use colloidal oatmeal for the broad whole-oat system while adding a standardized beta-glucan material for a more targeted polysaccharide contribution.

Or oat kernel oil might contribute lipids while beta-glucan contributes to the aqueous phase.

That's not necessarily redundant.

The ingredients are doing different jobs.

Oat Is One of the Better Examples of Intelligent Ingredient Stacking

“Ingredient stacking” can easily become marketing theater.

Five forms of something aren't automatically better than one.

Oat is different because the plant contains chemically distinct fractions that can contribute in different ways.

A sophisticated oat-based product could potentially draw from:

Beta-glucan for polysaccharide-based hydration and skin comfort.

Oat kernel oil for lipid-phase emolliency.

Oat extract for selected botanical components depending on the extraction.

Colloidal oatmeal for the broader composition of the oat kernel and, where appropriate, its established OTC skin-protectant role.

That gives the chemist a legitimate reason to use more than one oat-derived material.

But there still has to be a reason.

Adding four oat INCI names solely so the front of the package can say “4X Oat Complex” isn't formulation sophistication by itself.

Each material should earn its place.

Molecular Weight Matters With Beta-Glucan

This is an area of beta-glucan science that is becoming particularly interesting.

Like other polysaccharides, beta-glucan can exist across different molecular-weight ranges.

That can influence solubility, viscosity, film formation, skin interaction, and delivery.

A 2025 study investigated enzymatically produced oat beta-glucooligosaccharides with an average molecular weight around 1 kDa. Compared with the original higher-molecular-weight beta-glucan, the smaller oligosaccharides showed improved solubility and skin permeability in the experimental systems studied. The research also investigated biological activity related to UVB-induced photodamage, although much of that evidence remains preclinical.

This doesn't mean “lower molecular weight is always better.”

It means Beta-Glucan on an INCI list may tell you less than you think.

Molecular-weight distribution, source, processing, purity, concentration, and supplier technology can all change what the raw material contributes to a formula.

This is exactly the kind of information consumers can't see from the back of the bottle.

Does Beta-Glucan Penetrate the Skin?

Large polysaccharides are often assumed to sit entirely on the skin surface because of their molecular size.

The real answer is more nuanced.

Research has investigated topical beta-glucan penetration and found evidence that some beta-glucan materials can interact beyond the immediate skin surface, while newer research is specifically investigating lower-molecular-weight oat beta-glucan derivatives to improve permeability.

But penetration shouldn't become the only measure of whether a cosmetic ingredient is useful.

A polymer can contribute valuable hydration, film formation, surface conditioning, and sensory effects without needing deep penetration.

This is something skincare marketing often gets backwards.

Deeper isn't automatically better.

The ingredient needs to reach the place where its intended function occurs.

Beta-Glucan vs. Hyaluronic Acid

This comparison has become more common as beta-glucan gains consumer recognition.

Both can contribute to hydration, but I wouldn't formulate by deciding which one “wins.”

Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan with its own molecular-weight-dependent properties and extensive use as a humectant and film-forming polymer.

Beta-glucan is a different polysaccharide family with different structures, sources, biological interactions, and sensory behavior.

They can also be used together.

The formulation question becomes whether the combination gives us something useful that either ingredient alone doesn't.

Perhaps we want a different film profile.

Perhaps the molecular-weight strategies complement one another.

Perhaps beta-glucan supports the sensitive-skin story while hyaluronic acid provides consumer-recognizable hydration positioning.

Or perhaps one polymer already gives the formula everything it needs.

There is no prize for fitting the most polysaccharides into a serum.

Beta-Glucan vs. Ceramides

These ingredients are even less interchangeable.

Ceramides are lipids that form part of the stratum corneum's intercellular lipid structure.

Beta-glucan is a polysaccharide.

A barrier-focused formula can therefore use them for very different reasons.

That can make the combination commercially and technically useful: beta-glucan can contribute hydration and skin comfort while a properly designed lipid system addresses the lipid side of barrier-focused formulation.

Why Beta-Glucan Works Particularly Well in Sensitive-Skin Concepts

Sensitive-skin formulation is not about finding one “calming” active.

The whole formula has to make sense.

A product can contain beta-glucan and colloidal oatmeal and still be poorly designed for a highly reactive consumer if the surrounding system creates unnecessary irritation or sensory discomfort.

For this type of product, I would think about the entire architecture:

  • Cleansing or leave-on format

  • Humectant system

  • Emolliency

  • Barrier lipids

  • Occlusion

  • Preservative system

  • Fragrance strategy

  • Botanical load

  • pH

  • Product texture

  • Packaging

  • Intended consumer

  • Claims

Sometimes what isn't added matters as much as the hero active.

That's particularly true when the target consumer is already telling you their skin reacts to everything.

The National Eczema Association Changes the Product-Development Conversation

For a brand intentionally developing for eczema-prone or highly sensitive consumers, ingredient selection is only one part of the brief.

Programs such as the National Eczema Association's Seal of Acceptance can influence how a product is designed and substantiated.

The right question at the beginning of development isn't simply:

“Can we add oat?”

It is:

“Who exactly is this product for, what claims do we intend to make, and what standards do we want the finished product to meet?”

Those answers can influence ingredient exclusions, fragrance decisions, testing, documentation, and the overall formulation strategy.

This is why certification and retailer goals are best established before formulation begins rather than checked after the product is finished.

Oat Can Be a Hero Ingredient Without Feeling Trend-Driven

There is an interesting commercial advantage to oat.

It is familiar.

Consumers already associate oatmeal with comfort and sensitive skin, while colloidal oatmeal has an established dermatologic history. Beta-glucan adds a more modern ingredient-science layer to that familiar story.

That combination gives brands an unusual positioning opportunity.

You don't have to spend the entire marketing budget teaching consumers what an oat is.

But there is still technical depth available for a sophisticated product story.

Familiar botanical + established skin use + modern polysaccharide science can be a very effective combination.

The challenge is differentiation.

Another beige moisturizer with oatmeal on the front isn't automatically innovative.

The opportunity may be in what is built around it.

Where I See More Interesting Product Opportunities

The obvious oat product is a rich sensitive-skin cream.

That can still be excellent.

But it isn't the only format worth considering.

More differentiated concepts could include:

  • Lightweight beta-glucan barrier serums

  • Oat-based facial essences for reactive skin

  • Post-active recovery moisturizers

  • Sensitive-skin body treatments

  • Gentle scalp products

  • Hand treatments

  • Cleansers designed around minimal barrier disruption

  • Modern colloidal-oat formats with more elegant sensory profiles

  • Multi-fraction oat systems combining aqueous and lipid components

The commercial opportunity isn't necessarily to make oat feel futuristic.

It's to make an established ingredient system perform in a format consumers haven't already seen a hundred times.

Oat Extract Can Complicate a Formula Too

Botanical ingredients are sometimes treated as though adding more automatically makes a product gentler.

That isn't how formulation works.

Every additional extract introduces another raw material with its own:

  • Carrier

  • Solids

  • Electrolytes

  • Color

  • Odor

  • Preservation considerations

  • Supply chain

  • Documentation

  • Potential variability

A sensitive-skin formula containing fifteen botanical extracts may actually be less strategically clean than one built around two or three well-characterized technologies.

This is another reason I like beta-glucan and oat as a formulation story.

They don't need an enormous supporting cast.

If the product concept is strong, let them do their jobs.

Stability and Sensory Still Decide Whether the Product Works Commercially

Polysaccharides can influence rheology and sensory characteristics.

Botanical materials can contribute color or odor.

Oat powders can affect appearance and texture.

Lipids influence richness and spread.

Preservation still has to work.

And the finished product has to remain stable in its intended packaging.

This becomes especially important in products designed for sensitive consumers because formulators may already be working within tighter ingredient exclusions.

Removing ingredients is easy on paper.

Creating an elegant, stable, well-preserved product inside those constraints is the actual development challenge.

That tells you what is present.

It doesn't tell you the quantitative strategy.

A brand that owns its finished quantitative formula can know which commercial oat materials are being used, their inclusion levels, and how the system has been designed.

That matters when the product's positioning depends on more than having a trace amount of a recognizable ingredient.

It can also matter later if the brand needs to change manufacturers, qualify another supplier, optimize COGS, modify a certification strategy, or evolve the product as newer beta-glucan technologies become available.

The valuable asset isn't simply the list of ingredients.

It's knowing how the ingredients were put together and having control over that architecture.

But there is another kind of innovation: understanding an established material well enough to use it more intelligently.

Oat gives us a whole plant system. Beta-glucan gives us a more targeted polysaccharide technology. Oat oil gives us a lipid fraction. Colloidal oatmeal gives us a long-established skin-protectant platform with regulatory significance.

Then newer molecular-weight and processing technologies give us another generation of possibilities.

That's much more interesting to me than adding “oat extract” to a formula because sensitive-skin products are supposed to contain oat.

The future of formulation isn't always about finding another ingredient.

Sometimes it's about finally understanding how much technology was hiding inside an ingredient we already had.
