Start With Your Market, Not Your UV Filters

One of the biggest mistakes beauty founders make is beginning sunscreen development by asking, "Which UV filters should I use?"

The better question is:

Who am I building this product for?

An everyday facial moisturizer with SPF has different requirements than a beach sunscreen.

A luxury skincare brand has different priorities than a family sun care brand.

A dermatologist-developed line may emphasize clinical performance, while a clean beauty brand may prioritize mineral filters and ingredient transparency.

Before selecting a single ingredient, define your customer, your positioning, your target market, and the countries where you intend to sell.

Understanding SPF

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor.

Contrary to popular belief, SPF doesn't measure how long you can stay in the sun.

It measures how effectively a product helps protect skin from UVB radiation, the portion of sunlight primarily responsible for sunburn.

Protection against UVA radiation, which contributes significantly to premature aging and long-term skin damage, is measured separately through broad-spectrum testing and other regional regulatory standards.

Modern sunscreen development isn't simply about achieving a high SPF number.

It's about creating balanced protection across the UV spectrum while maintaining cosmetic elegance.

Chemical vs. Mineral UV Filters

One of the first decisions in SPF formulation is selecting the UV filter system.

Each approach offers unique advantages and formulation challenges.

Mineral (Inorganic) Sunscreens

Mineral sunscreens rely primarily on zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both.

These inorganic filters provide broad-spectrum protection by interacting with ultraviolet radiation through a combination of scattering, reflection, and absorption.

Advantages include:

  • Consumer perception as "mineral"

  • Often preferred by sensitive skin consumers

  • Increasing popularity among clean beauty brands

Many modern formulations also take a hybrid approach, combining carefully selected mineral and organic UV filters to balance broad-spectrum protection, aesthetics, photostability, and regulatory flexibility.

As a formulator, I have extensive experience developing zinc oxide sunscreen systems, so I naturally appreciate the advantages mineral technologies can offer. Zinc oxide provides excellent broad-spectrum protection and aligns well with many modern skincare philosophies. Developing elegant zinc oxide formulations, however, requires considerable formulation expertise to optimize dispersion, texture, aesthetics, stability, and manufacturability without compromising performance. At the same time, I also recognize that no single technology is right for every brand or every consumer.

One exciting area of innovation is combining zinc oxide with next-generation UV filters such as Bemotrizinol (BEMT). These hybrid systems can improve cosmetic elegance, enhance photostability, and may reduce or eliminate the need for older UV filters such as octocrylene, depending on the formulation and target market.

The possibilities are nearly endless.

Modern sunscreen formulation offers more possibilities than ever before, allowing brands to design UV protection systems that align with their performance goals, ingredient philosophy, customer expectations, and regulatory markets.

The best sunscreen isn't built around trends or ingredient lists.

It's built around transparency, thoughtful formulation, and alignment with your customer, your regulatory markets, and your brand philosophy.

Most importantly, every sunscreen formulation must be validated through standardized SPF testing. Regardless of how promising a formula looks on paper or performs in the laboratory, only finished-product testing can determine the SPF and support the claims made on the label.

The Rise of Next-Generation UV Filters

Sunscreen technology continues to evolve.

One of the most significant advances has been the development of newer-generation UV filters that offer improved photostability and broader UV coverage.

One example is Bemotrizinol (BEMT).

Bemotrizinol has attracted significant attention because of its excellent photostability and ability to stabilize other UV filters within a formulation.

For formulators, technologies like BEMT create opportunities to improve both product performance and long-term stability.

However, availability and regulatory approval vary by market.
