Bakuchiol vs. Retinol: Is It Really a Retinol Alternative?

Bakuchiol has one of the best marketing stories in modern skincare.

It is plant-derived, associated with many of the same visible skin concerns as retinol, and frequently positioned as a gentler alternative for people who want the benefits of a retinoid without the irritation.

There is legitimate science behind some of that enthusiasm.

A randomized, double-blind 12-week study directly comparing topical bakuchiol with retinol found that both improved wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation, while participants using retinol reported more scaling and stinging.

But that does not make bakuchiol a botanical version of retinol.

The molecules are structurally different. Bakuchiol is not a retinoid. It doesn't need to become retinoic acid to work. And while the evidence is promising, retinoids have a much larger body of research behind them.

The interesting question isn't whether bakuchiol can replace retinol molecule for molecule.

It's what bakuchiol can do on its own, and when that makes it the better ingredient for the product you're actually trying to create.

What Is Bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is a plant-derived meroterpene phenol associated primarily with the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, also known as Babchi or Babchi seed.

Its cosmetic INCI name is:

Bakuchiol

That simplicity is worth noting because bakuchiol differs from ingredient families such as vitamin C, retinoids, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or peptides, where multiple INCI forms can represent meaningfully different technologies.

With bakuchiol, the formulation conversation is less about choosing among numerous derivatives and more about the quality and purity of the raw material, its concentration, its source, how it is delivered, and the formula surrounding it.

Bakuchiol itself is also different from simply adding Psoralea corylifolia plant extract to a product.

The plant contains numerous compounds. Bakuchiol is one defined constituent.

That distinction matters.

Bakuchiol Is Not Retinol

This is probably the single most important thing to understand.

Bakuchiol and retinol are different molecules.

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative and part of the retinoid family. Its activity in skin is associated with conversion through retinaldehyde toward retinoic acid, which interacts with retinoid receptors and influences gene expression.

Bakuchiol has no structural resemblance to retinoids, although research suggests that it can influence some gene-expression pathways in ways that overlap with retinol. Reviews of the evidence therefore describe it as a functional analogue rather than a retinoid itself.

That's a useful distinction.

Calling bakuchiol a retinol alternative can make sense from a consumer and product-positioning perspective.

Calling it natural retinol is scientifically misleading.

It isn't retinol from a plant.

It is bakuchiol.

What Does Bakuchiol Actually Do for Skin?

Most of the interest in bakuchiol centers on visible skin aging, pigmentation, and blemish-prone skin.

Research has investigated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, pigmentation-related, and retinol-like gene-expression effects, although the evidence is not equally strong for every proposed benefit.

Fine Lines and Visible Photoaging

This is where bakuchiol has some of its most compelling human evidence.

In the best-known direct comparison, 44 participants were assigned either 0.5% bakuchiol cream twice daily or 0.5% retinol cream once daily for 12 weeks.

Both groups showed significant decreases in wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation, with no statistically significant difference between the two groups for those outcomes.

Retinol users, however, reported more scaling and stinging.

That's an interesting result.

It's also one study with 44 participants.

It supports taking bakuchiol seriously. It doesn't establish that decades of retinoid research can now be replaced by a single head-to-head trial.

Uneven-Looking Tone and Hyperpigmentation

Bakuchiol has also been investigated for visible pigmentation.

The same 12-week comparative study found improvement in hyperpigmentation with both bakuchiol and retinol. Other clinical research has included bakuchiol in products targeting post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and photodamage.

For a formulator, this makes bakuchiol particularly interesting because visible aging and uneven tone frequently overlap as consumer concerns.

One ingredient can therefore contribute to a broader product story without needing to promise ten unrelated benefits.

Blemish-Prone Skin

Bakuchiol also appears increasingly in products for blemish-prone skin.

There is research examining antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity, and human studies have investigated bakuchiol-containing products for acne. However, a 2024 systematic review noted an important limitation: many clinical studies used combination formulations, making it difficult to determine exactly how much of the observed effect came from bakuchiol itself.

That distinction matters.

A serum containing bakuchiol plus salicylic acid or several other actives may perform beautifully.

It doesn't mean every result from that serum belongs to bakuchiol.

And in the United States, a cosmetic product shouldn't casually cross from supporting the appearance of blemish-prone skin into claiming to treat acne without considering the applicable drug requirements.

What Does the Evidence for Bakuchiol Really Look Like?

This is where the bakuchiol story needs a little restraint.

A 2022 systematic review identified 29 relevant publications after exclusions, including 16 preclinical studies and seven clinical studies. The authors concluded that bakuchiol showed promise but that additional research was needed.

A more recent 2024 systematic review focused specifically on human clinical trials and found 15 studies. Twelve were unblinded open-label trials without a control group, ten evaluated combination therapies containing bakuchiol, and four did not specify the bakuchiol concentration. The authors concluded that methodological limitations created a high risk of bias and that better controlled studies are still needed.

That's probably the fairest way to describe where we are.

Bakuchiol has more evidence than a passing skincare trend, but less evidence than the marketing sometimes implies.

The direct retinol comparison is compelling.

The broader literature is promising.

The evidence base is still developing.

Those three statements can all be true at once.

Bakuchiol vs. Retinol

The internet tends to turn this into a winner-and-loser comparison.

Formulation is rarely that simple.

Retinol Has the Deeper Evidence Base

Retinoids have been studied extensively for visible photoaging and other dermatologic applications. Bakuchiol's clinical literature is much smaller.

If the question is simply which ingredient family has more evidence behind it?, retinoids win.

Bakuchiol May Be Better Tolerated

This is one of bakuchiol's most interesting advantages.

In the direct comparative study, participants using retinol experienced more scaling and stinging than those using bakuchiol.

That can matter enormously in the real world.

The theoretically strongest active isn't always the best ingredient for every consumer if they can't tolerate the product well enough to use it consistently.

They Do Not Work the Same Way

Bakuchiol is not converted into retinoic acid and is not simply a weaker botanical retinoid.

The overlap appears to be functional rather than structural.

That is precisely why I think the comparison is useful but also limiting.

Retinol helped consumers understand what category bakuchiol belongs near.

Now bakuchiol needs to be evaluated on its own merits.

Is Bakuchiol Better for Sensitive Skin?

Potentially, but this is another claim that deserves qualification.

Bakuchiol is often selected for products targeting consumers who find retinoids difficult to tolerate, and the comparative clinical trial supports a lower incidence of scaling and stinging relative to retinol under the conditions studied.

That doesn't make bakuchiol incapable of irritation or sensitization.

A systematic review identified at least one published adverse-event report involving contact dermatitis.

More importantly, the consumer uses a finished product, not an isolated ingredient.

Fragrance, exfoliating acids, solvents, preservatives, essential oils, other actives, and the overall formula can all influence tolerability.

Putting bakuchiol into an aggressive multi-active serum doesn't automatically create a sensitive-skin product.

What Percentage of Bakuchiol Is Used in Skincare?

The concentration most strongly associated with the direct retinol comparison is 0.5% bakuchiol.

That doesn't make 0.5% a universal optimum.

Commercial bakuchiol raw materials and supplier recommendations vary, and the appropriate level depends on purity, product format, intended positioning, supporting actives, stability, sensory characteristics, and the evidence supporting the particular raw material.

For a founder, this is an important distinction.

Seeing Bakuchiol on an ingredient list doesn't tell you how much is present.

And seeing a percentage on the front of the package doesn't tell you whether the complete formula is better.

The right percentage is the level that makes sense inside the complete formula, not simply the highest amount technically possible.

Bakuchiol Raw Material Quality Matters

This is one of the areas where the ingredient becomes more interesting from a formulation perspective.

A founder may say:

“I want bakuchiol.”

The chemist still has decisions to make.

Bakuchiol is associated with Psoralea corylifolia, but using a botanical extract from that plant is not necessarily equivalent to using a purified cosmetic-grade bakuchiol raw material.

The plant contains other constituents, including psoralens.

That means supplier selection, purity, specifications, documentation, trace impurities, consistency, and manufacturing method matter.

Two products can both tell a “Babchi” story while using very different raw-material strategies.

This is one reason ingredient sourcing shouldn't happen after the product concept is already finalized.

The botanical source is the beginning of the ingredient story, not the specification.

Is Bakuchiol Natural?

Bakuchiol's plant origin is a major part of its appeal.

But for a brand working toward a natural-origin standard, retailer requirement, clean standard, or certification, the relevant question is more specific:

Does this particular commercial bakuchiol raw material meet the standard we're designing toward?

That depends on the supplier, manufacturing process, purity, carriers if present, documentation, and the requirements of the applicable program.

The word Bakuchiol on an INCI list can't answer all of those questions.

This is where Clean Beauty 2.0 becomes more useful than simply dividing ingredients into natural and synthetic categories.

The product still has to perform.

Bakuchiol and Clean Beauty 2.0

Bakuchiol arrived at exactly the right moment for clean beauty.

Consumers were becoming more interested in high-performance actives while also looking for botanical alternatives to conventional technologies.

Bakuchiol gave brands a very understandable story:

plant-derived + visible-aging benefits + potentially better tolerability.

That's commercially powerful.

But the next stage of clean beauty needs to go further than origin.

Is the raw material standardized?

Is the evidence relevant to the concentration being used?

Is the finished formula stable?

Does it feel elegant?

Is it well preserved?

Does it meet the intended retailer or certification requirements?

And most importantly, does it actually create a product worth repurchasing?

Clean Beauty 2.0 isn't about abandoning ingredient standards.

It's about expecting performance from the formula within those standards.

Bakuchiol fits that philosophy unusually well.

Bakuchiol Is Oil-Soluble, and That Changes the Product

Bakuchiol is a hydrophobic ingredient.

That matters because it influences where and how it can be incorporated into a formulation.

A facial oil containing bakuchiol is technically a very different starting point from a lightweight water-based serum or gel-cream positioned around the same ingredient.

If the desired product contains a significant aqueous phase, the chemist has to build an appropriate delivery architecture around the bakuchiol.

That architecture affects far more than whether the ingredient stays in the bottle.

It can influence:

  • Sensory profile

  • Appearance

  • Ingredient delivery

  • Stability

  • Packaging

  • Compatibility with other actives

  • Manufacturing

  • COGS

Recent research is still exploring ways to improve bakuchiol delivery. A 2026 study, for example, investigated polymeric nanoparticles to address bakuchiol's hydrophobicity and chemical instability in aqueous systems. That's early formulation research rather than proof that every encapsulated bakuchiol product is superior, but it shows where the technology may be heading.

This is the part of the bakuchiol conversation I find more interesting than another “natural retinol” headline.

The next generation of bakuchiol products may differentiate through delivery, not simply through the ingredient itself.

Stability Still Matters

Plant-derived does not mean formulation-proof.

Bakuchiol has its own stability considerations, and emerging research continues to investigate technologies intended to improve its chemical stability and incorporation into aqueous cosmetic systems.

The surrounding oil phase, antioxidants, light exposure, packaging, temperature, other actives, and complete formulation environment can all become relevant during development.

This is also why you cannot determine shelf life by looking at an ingredient list.

The finished formula needs to be evaluated as a finished formula.

Can You Use Bakuchiol With Retinol?

Yes, they can appear in the same skincare strategy, and there is no universal rule saying bakuchiol and retinol must be separated.

But from a product-development standpoint, the more interesting question is:

Why are we combining them?

If bakuchiol is being positioned specifically for consumers who don't want or tolerate retinol, adding retinol defeats the concept.

If the objective is instead to create a sophisticated visible-aging product that uses several complementary technologies, the combination may be worth considering.

This is where ingredient compatibility and product strategy become two different things.

Can they coexist?

What Works Well With Bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol can work within several active strategies, but the supporting ingredients should be chosen around the consumer and product objective.

Antioxidants

Antioxidant systems can make sense in visible-aging products, particularly when the concept is focused on environmental exposure and photodamage.

That doesn't mean every antioxidant needs to be stacked into the same bottle.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide can complement bakuchiol particularly well in formulas focused on uneven-looking tone, barrier support, or visible aging.

It also has strong consumer recognition, which can help make a more sophisticated bakuchiol concept easier to understand.

Ceramides and Barrier-Support Ingredients

For consumers moving away from retinol because of dryness or irritation, a formula that also pays attention to barrier comfort may make more sense than simply replacing retinol with bakuchiol and leaving everything else unchanged.

Ceramides, humectants, emollients, and soothing technologies can therefore become strategically important.

Vitamin C Technologies

Bakuchiol may also be paired with vitamin C technologies in broader antioxidant and visible-aging concepts.

The actual vitamin C form matters.

A chemist has to consider solubility, pH, stability, product format, and the complete active system rather than simply deciding that two popular ingredients “work well together.”

When the Multi-Active Story Becomes Too Much

Bakuchiol is easy to turn into an ingredient-list competition.

Bakuchiol.

Peptides.

Vitamin C.

Niacinamide.

Ceramides.

Hyaluronic acid.

Ectoin.

Coenzyme Q10.

Now we have an impressive ingredient list.

Do we have a better product?

Maybe.

Or we may have increased COGS, complicated stability, created sensory problems, added multiple supplier dependencies, and made it impossible for the consumer to understand what the product is actually supposed to do.

Bakuchiol already has a clear story.

Sometimes the smarter product is the one that gives it two or three carefully selected supporting technologies and lets the concept breathe.

A long active list can signal sophistication.

So can restraint.

Should Bakuchiol Be the Hero Ingredient?

Bakuchiol still has enough consumer recognition to work as a hero ingredient.

But the market is considerably more crowded than it was when “plant-based retinol alternative” felt new.

That changes the product-development opportunity.

A generic bakuchiol facial oil may be easy to explain, but difficult to differentiate.

A more interesting concept could be built around:

  • Sensitive-skin visible aging

  • Barrier-supportive alternatives to aggressive active routines

  • Bakuchiol plus biotechnology-derived supporting actives

  • A sophisticated eye treatment

  • A body treatment for visible texture and aging

  • A night cream designed around tolerability rather than maximum active intensity

  • Advanced delivery technology

  • A highly elegant retinol-free serum for consumers deliberately avoiding vitamin A derivatives

The commercial opportunity is no longer simply put bakuchiol in a bottle.

It's deciding what bakuchiol allows you to make that would be harder to create with another ingredient.

Bakuchiol vs. Retinol Is Also a Product-Strategy Decision

For founders, I would not choose between these ingredients by asking which one wins scientifically in the abstract.

I'd start with the consumer.

If the product is intended for experienced retinoid users seeking maximum familiarity with established retinoid science, retinol or another appropriate retinoid technology may make more sense.

If the consumer is actively looking for a retinol-free product, prioritizes botanical positioning, has struggled with retinoid tolerability, or shops within a particular clean-beauty philosophy, bakuchiol may create a stronger concept.

If the goal is differentiation, neither ingredient alone may be enough.

The supporting technologies, sensory profile, delivery system, product format, substantiation, sourcing story, and overall positioning can become the actual innovation.

That's the difference between choosing an active and developing a product.

Formula Ownership Can Matter With a Bakuchiol Product

Bakuchiol is also a good example of why the quantitative formula can matter to a brand.

An ingredient list may tell you Bakuchiol is present.

It doesn't tell you the percentage.

It doesn't tell you which commercial raw material was selected.

It doesn't tell you how the oil phase or delivery system was built around it.

And it doesn't tell you whether the formula was intentionally designed around the ingredient or whether enough was added primarily to support the label story.

When a brand owns 100% of its finished quantitative formula, it can know and control the actual bakuchiol level and the architecture surrounding it.

That can become valuable later if the brand wants to change manufacturers, optimize COGS, qualify another raw-material supplier, modify the supporting active system, adapt to a retailer requirement, or incorporate a newer bakuchiol delivery technology.

Formula ownership doesn't transfer ownership of a supplier's patented process, trademark, proprietary raw material, or delivery technology.

It gives the brand control over its finished quantitative formula.

For an ingredient whose commercial value depends heavily on how it is actually used, that transparency can matter.

Retinol gave consumers a reference point. That was useful. But once an ingredient becomes established, constantly defining it by what it isn't starts to limit the product-development conversation.

Bakuchiol has its own advantages. It can support a botanical story. It can fit beautifully into modern clean-beauty development. It has promising human evidence. It gives formulators another option when tolerability is central to the brief. And new delivery technologies may eventually expand what we can do with it.

That's enough of a reason for it to exist.

The opportunity now is to stop asking whether we can make another natural-retinol serum and start asking what the best bakuchiol product could actually be.

That shift matters beyond this one ingredient.

Good formulation doesn't begin with finding the closest substitute for whatever already works.

Sometimes it begins with understanding what the alternative lets us do differently.
